Small Details That Make Guests Feel Welcome

The homes I feel most comfortable in aren't necessarily the most impressive ones. They're the ones where I don't have to ask where to put my bag, whether I can grab another drink, or if I'm allowed to sit on the nice sofa.

Good hosting is really about anticipating those little moments. Here are a few details that make a bigger difference than you might think.

Have a Drink Ready

There's always that slightly awkward five minutes when someone first arrives. Giving them something to do immediately helps.

Have wine chilled, cocktails mostly prepped, or sparkling water ready to pour. It doesn't need to be elaborate, the point is that your guest isn't standing in the kitchen wondering what to do while you finish getting ready.

Put Out the Glassware Before You Need It

This is such a small thing, but I notice it every time.

Set out wine glasses, cocktail glasses, or water glasses before guests arrive instead of pulling them from cabinets throughout the night. It makes the room feel ready for company and, more practically, lets people refill their own drinks without asking.

The same goes for water. A carafe on the table means nobody has to interrupt dinner to ask for it.

Give People Somewhere to Put Their Things

Think about what happens in the first 30 seconds after someone walks through your door.

Where does their bag go? Their jacket? The bottle of wine they brought?

Clear a chair, console, coat hook, or spot in a bedroom ahead of time. It's one of those details no one will compliment you on, which is probably a sign that you've done it right.

Pay Attention to the Bathroom

You don't need hotel amenities. You do need a fresh hand towel, enough toilet paper, soap, and an empty-ish trash can.

It's also one of the few rooms your guests will spend time in completely alone, which means they'll notice the details you stopped noticing months ago. Give it a quick once-over before the doorbell rings.

Finish Before Everyone Arrives

This might be the most important one.

If you're frantically chopping vegetables when your first guest arrives, they're immediately going to wonder if they should help. Try to have anything that requires your full attention finished beforehand.

You can still toss a salad or pull something from the oven. You just don't want to spend the first half hour of your own dinner party in the kitchen.

Making people feel welcome has very little to do with having a perfect home or setting an elaborate table.

It's really about removing the small moments where a guest has to wonder, What am I supposed to do?

Have the drinks cold. Put out the glasses. Clear a spot for their things. Then stop fussing with the house and enjoy the people you invited into it.
