Beyond the Basics: 3 Types of Glassware You Didn’t Know You Needed

Beyond the Basics: 3 Types of Glassware You Didn’t Know You Needed

I’ll be the first to admit that no one needs twelve different types of glasses in their cabinet.

But once you have the basics covered, there are a few more unexpected styles that are genuinely fun to own. Some make a specific drink better. Others are really just there to make pouring one more interesting. I think there’s room for both.

1. Wine Bottle Glasses: The Conversation Starter

You’ve probably seen these without realizing what they are. Wine bottle glasses are drinking glasses made from the bottom portion of a wine bottle, keeping the original green glass and heavier feel.

They’re less about proper wine tasting and more about the table itself. Put a set out for water, cocktails or wine alongside a cheese board and people will ask about them. They have that slightly unexpected quality that makes an otherwise simple setup feel more collected.

And yes, they also make a very good gift for the person who already owns every traditional wine glass imaginable.

2. Tequila Tasting Glasses: Because Tequila Isn’t Just for Shots

This might be the glass people are most surprised to learn exists.

A tequila tasting glass is designed for sipping tequila rather than shooting it, with a shape that gives the spirit more room to express its aroma and flavor. Riedel even developed its tequila glass with input from tequila producers specifically to enhance the spirit's aroma and taste.

In other words, if you’re opening a good reposado or añejo, you might want to retire the shot glass.

3. Stemless Martini Glasses: A Martini Glass You Can Actually Relax Around

I love the look of a classic martini glass. I do not love navigating a crowded cocktail table while holding one.

The classic V-shaped martini glass actually dates back to the 1920s, with its sharp angles influenced by Art Deco design. The stemless version keeps that instantly recognizable silhouette, just in a format that feels a little more relaxed for entertaining. That’s the appeal of a stemless martini glass. You still get that recognizable wide, angular bowl, but with a lower center of gravity and less opportunity for disaster. Even professional glassmakers offer stemless versions specifically for the added stability and practicality.

They're especially good for entertaining when people are moving around rather than sitting at a formal table. And aesthetically, they feel a little more modern without losing what makes a martini glass a martini glass.

Do You Actually Need Specialty Glassware?

Probably not. And that’s sort of the point.

Once you own the essentials, glassware can become less about checking boxes and more about choosing pieces that make your bar or table more interesting.

Not every glass has to be an essential. Some are worth owning simply because they make pouring a drink more fun.

About Crystal Imagery

Crystal Imagery offers far more than the traditional rocks glasses, wine glasses and beer mugs you might expect from custom glassware.

Our collection includes everything from wine bottle glasses and tequila tasting glasses to stemless martini glasses, each of which can be customized using our deep sandcarving process. The design is physically carved into the glass for visible depth and texture you can actually feel.

Because sometimes the glass people remember most is the one they weren't expecting.
